Week 7| Irina Dvalidze

As a big fan of Vanity Fair magazine, my favorite section would have to be their photo galleries. If you follow the mag, you know that Vanity fair has a neck for coming up with really creative and visually interesting photo selections. For my monochromatic image i chose one of Mark Seliger's photos from the Hitchcock inspired photo series, Vanity Fair published in 2008. All the Hitchcock fans can immediately pin point one of the best know shots from "Psycho," as portrayed by Marion Cotillard. Monochromatic tones are what make this image so powerful. The fact that it is done in black and white add to the horror appeal, adding ambiguity to the context. While the image is done in monochromatic tones, it has incredible range within the shadows adding to the horror aspect of it. This image is very affective in conveying a message of fear and theatrical distress, which was the photographer's primary goal.

As far as bold use of color goes, Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette serves as an ideal example. Th entire film is all about bold color, which aims to convey the feel of the rococo era. Coppola is not shy about using bright fuchsia in costume and settings. This gives characters a very rich and frivolous appeal. There is never a question about the context thanks to the color choices. You will hardly ever see blend and boring colors in the film. They are very lively and bright, helping convey the film's message clearly.
