Week 7: Jasuta

Mika is a British musical artist of the bubblegum pop genre. But not only does Mika create music, but he and his sister create all of the artwork featured on his albums and website. Like his music, his artwork just resonates with color and vivacity. He employs unusual tones that play off each other, from pastels to primaries, and juxtaposes contrasting with complementary.

While his artwork explodes with color, his ad campaign for Paul Smith mutes things down. The photograph plays with a monochromatic scheme in the khaki of his shirt, the khaki of the wallpaper, and arguably his khaki skin tone. The result is a stimulating visual that is reminiscint of Banksy's "Elephant in the Room" exhibition. It provokes the viewer, making the audience search for Mika, and probe the visual rather than glance at it. The monochromatic scheme is effective in creating a complex visual, just as Mika's album artwork is with loud and explosive color.
