Inside Lacrosse literally just redesigned their website today and is an upgrade over the old one. It provides easy access for the user to features such as the message board, blogs, and videos. By having multiple stories appear on the front page, it takes after ESPN.com, it's parent site, and allows the user to rotate to the story that they want to read. The accessibility of scores throughout the NCAA is present on the top, as well, through it's new scrolling scoreboard feature that will allow users to access scores to past games, games in action, and a look ahead to upcoming games. The top toolbar is also useful and even allows easy access to Inside Lacrosse's Facebook page and Twitter feed, two very useful tools in today's social media driven world. There is also instant access to videos for the user, which gives them the top news and analysis in lacrosse right on the click of a button. The one negative I see with this is that perhaps there is too much access to the site going on in the new front page, as although there is easy access to scores, highlights, stories, blogs, and videos, there's a bit too much. In addition, the past top news goes pretty far down, making the site bigger than it should be. There is a bit of overload on the user, but it still provides a nice clean look and allows the user to access many of the features the site has to offer. It's worth noting that this new version of the front page is a beta, so any changes that will come in the next few months will be due to the requests of the public. As for now, it's a very good start to Inside Lacrosse's redesign, and right in the nick of time no less with the college lacrosse season kicking off this weekend.

Ryan,
ReplyDeleteGood job anaylyzing the site's re-design. I think you make a good point - how much content can a site make accessible from its home page before it becomes too overwhelming for the user. Design is constantly about balance... or at least how to use the unbalanced in a way that works well.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers,
paul
