Week One l McGill

There's a good chance that before reading this blog post, you checked your Facebook page. People across the country see the facebook wordmark multiple times throughout the day. Facebook utilizes a sans seriph typeface to portray several characteristics of the company to users. With no descenders, all of the letters fit neatly on the baseline. By using all lowercase letters, Facebook maintains a casual image. The lowercase letters also indicate that the company is modern and trying to appeal to the youth. The company is marketed as a social networking tool - something which is meant to be fun. I think the font serves its purpose well. The text in the wordmark is white with a blue background to place emphasis to the name. Blue is a comforting color which combined with the relaxed text creates a good environment for social networking. My favorite part of the wordmark is the spacing between the letters "f" and "a" the right end of the cross of the "f" slants from low to high and the top of the "a" mimics this. With only a small space in between the two letters, the letters practically connect.

Facebook maintains a sans seriph font throughout its website but does change the body font to a more basic font. It continues the use of the color blue which outlines the wordmark in different places in the body. This continuation of color usage connects the different parts of the sites.

  1. Fran,

Good observations all around. What font are these guys using? I hadn't noticed the spacing/shaping of the f and a before, but that's really cool.

    Keep up the good work.

    Cheers,
