Design Project #4: Magazine Layout Rationale

I wanted to design a layout based on one of my favorite musicians, Devendra Banhart. I chose a story Under the Radar magazine did profiling him. Since it was a profile piece I wanted to find images that would focus on him as an individual and reflect what he stands for as far as his music and his influences. One of the major themes that stuck out from the article was Banhart’s worldwide reach and international inspirations, so I made the point to draw the reader in through the exotic angle.

For the headline I chose Copal Decorated typeface, which had this fun, quirky, ethnic feel to it. An ideal fit considering Banhart’s multiracial heritage. I thought that it would reflect the international aspect showed in the article. For the body and deck head I wanted to have a radically contrasting typeface, which is why I used Helvetica variations for the deck head and captions, while making the body text Caslon, a well rounded, easy to read typeface. I tried to create a visual gestalt throughout by sampling colors from the photographs and recreating them within the type as seen in my sidebar and pull quotes.

I chose Peignot bold for the magazine nameplate. I chose to mane the magazine after one of Devendra’s songs titled Samba Vexillographica. On my first spread I sampled a low toned red within the deck head and the byline, to keep a visual continuation, which ties into the second and third spreads as a accent point within the pull quotes.
